That clean wood chip smell!

Winter is coming and the pens are fresh and clean. After shoveling and sweeping, I sprinkled diatomaceous earth and fresh pine chips. I believe that a clean pen prevents a lot of problems (bugs and illness for sure), plus the eggs collected are nestled in tidy boxes without getting messy. All the dishes and waterers have been scrubbed with a soap/vinegar solution and will stay clean for at least 5 minutes. The duck/goose feeding areas are a bit hopeless, but a boot mat under their water bucket catches the worst of it. At least once the ground freezes their beloved mud won't be a problem for a while.
